Job Posting: Director of Clinical OperationsPosition: Full Time, 13 months, rotating 4 days on/ 2 days offStart date: January 3, 2022Location: ACAM Birth Center, Concepción Chiquirichapa, GuatemalaSalary: $2,000 USD monthly stipendMaya Midwifery International seeks a flexible, dynamic full-time on-site Director of Clinical Operations (DCO), experienced in midwifery, leadership, and non-profit programs, and with a deep commitment to maternal and child health, indigenous midwifery, and preserving local traditions, to live and work at the Association of Midwives of the Mam Speaking Area (ACAM) birth center in Concepción Chiquirichapa, Guatemala.The DCO will partner with the Executive Director, the ACAM Council, the Local Administrative Coordinator, the Social Media Coordinator, the U.S. Board of Directors, midwives, staff, students, preceptors, and donors to design, implement, oversee, and support ACAM’s midwifery service programs. This position involves clinical and administrative duties and involvement in all aspects of program delivery and reporting. Ideal candidates are fluent in Spanish, with prior experience in low-income international settings, and with full scope CNM or CPM practice experience for 5 years, including preceptorship of midwifery students.
A monthly stipend, room and board, one round trip ticket between the US and Guatemala, and partial reimbursement for travel/evacuation insurance are provided by the organization.
ResponsibilitiesProgram Oversight- Provide oversight and support for ACAM’s programs including: birth center clinic visits and delivery care; rotating mobile clinics to outlying communities; community days providing education and training to outlying community midwives; radio programs; and birth center specialty clinics including cervical cancer screenings and obstetric ultrasound- Support partnerships and outreach with other NGO’s, Guatemalan government health officials, and local clinicians in order to develop collaborative relationships andstrengthen the position of traditional midwifery within the healthcare system locally and nationally- Communicate weekly with Executive Director to review program goals, progress,challenges, and resultsStaff and Clinical Support- Work with the ACAM Council to support long and short-term program planning, and to review current program goals, objectives, and outcomes- Support effective internal and external communication, and strong working relationships among midwives, staff, and council members in support of program goals- Provide support to the Guatemalan physician with monthly meetings to assess program goal progress and reporting, troubleshoot challenges with staff or partners, support physician’s obstetric education and practice, and assess need for additional resources- Coordinate with the Administrative Assistant, whose responsibilities include ordering and arranging transport of grant supplies and medications, tracking purchases in Guatemala, and overseeing in-kind donations- Collaborate with midwives to write, update, and ensure dissemination and uptake of prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, gynecologic, and family planning protocols- Maintain clinical standards of care, conduct periodic midwife skills evaluations andneeds assessments, and develop and fortify midwife competencies- Design and implement hands-on skills, simulations, and didactic curriculum and lesson plans, including basic midwifery skills, advanced midwifery skills, and non-clinical skills that support clinical competence and project advancement; including availability to supervise and practice hands-on skills at consults and births- Collaborate with outlying community midwives as needed to develop individual skills and facilitate access to supplies- Facilitate development and maintenance of in-house midwife mentorship and trainee program, including development of hands-on skills and didactic curriculum for ACAM midwives to teach new birth center midwives and outlying community midwives- Design, implement, and maintain pathways to certification for specialized/advanced midwife skills, including certification documentation and maintenance of personnel files- Be available to manage clinical emergencies 24/7 while on-site- Be available for individual midwife skill practice as requested- Teach and facilitate proper clinical documentation and record-keeping systems- Teach and facilitate appropriate clinical follow-up for postpartum patients and referrals- Demonstrate use, maintenance, and cleaning/sterilization of equipment including but not limited to microscope, glucometer, hemoglobinometer, doppler, blood pressure cuffs, autoclave, and surgical tools- Investigate and facilitate opportunities for collaboration and cross-discipline education with local healthcare and related political organizations- Maintain flexibility, cultural humility, and sensitivity to different learning levels, literacy capabilities, learning styles, experiences, and backgrounds
Data, Administration, and Grant/Fundraising Management- Support the ACAM midwives and physician with data collection, tracking, management, and analysis pertaining to clinical services and outcomes- Collate outcome data and narrative evidence in support of program goals, and develop periodic external reports about program highlights and grant deliverables- Write reports and submit program data, photos, and stories, as specified for different grants and donors, including annual reports, and other communications as needed- Support the Administrative Assistant to plan and host donor visits in coordination with the Executive Director and ACAM Council- Support the Executive Director and Board with fundraising, as needed, includingexploring additional potential grant sources- Facilitate development and maintenance of global health student immersion program, in support of US-based CNM/CPM preceptors, and participate in prospective student interviews- Attend ACAM Council meetings, support agenda facilitation, contribute perspective, observe group dynamics and attitudes, identify individual potential for role advancement, and facilitate implementation of Council/Board decisions to advance project and to fulfill grant requirements- Serve as cultural translator with Executive Director between MMI Board and ACAMCouncil- Assess daily midwife tasks and behaviors to ensure consistency with project and grant goals- Support appropriate scheduling of midwives for in-house consults, mobile clinics,community days, radio programs, specialty days, and mandatory meetings and classes- Support the Administrative Assistant with inventory management, procurement ofneeded medications and supplies, supply distribution (for in-house and mobile clinics), equipment maintenance, and replacement/repair of equipment shortages ormalfunctions
Qualifications 1. Master’s degree in public health and/or midwifery, with 5 years experience in full-scope clinical care, including teaching/precepting and ultrasound competency, and an in-depth knowledge of the midwifery model of care.2. Ability to work in a low resource, international, multi-cultural environment; understanding of and experience with indigenous communities; demonstrated cultural humility; and commitment to diversity and inclusivity.3. Previous public health and/or service-delivery program design, implementation, and management experience.4. Demonstrated abilities in data tracking, management, analysis, and reporting.5. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and advanced Spanish; experience writing grant proposals and reports in English.6. Flexibility, self-direction, ability to maintain a positive attitude especially under stress, sense of humor, and humility are required.7. Experience living and working in Latin America, particularly Guatemala, a plus.
