JOB SUMMARY: The Lactation Consultant applies in-depth knowledge of a wide range of maternal and neonatal acute and chronic conditions that may affect breastfeeding. Assesses and manages complex lactation problems and assists the mother in attaining her individual breastfeeding goals. Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team as a consultant, educator, and mentor to nurses, health care professionals and patients. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Our unit cares for women of all ages, as well as newborns, from the healthiest to those requiring complex health care needs. Our population consists of mother-baby dyads, stable antepartum, and occasionally patients with benign gynecological diagnoses or surgeries. Our patients are unique because they are experiencing life-changing events and we get to be involved and support them along the way. One of the perks of working on my unit is excellent teamwork and work-life connections with amazing staff! Our nurses are successful because they have excellent clinical assessment skills and are committed to providing the best possible care to the patients we serve. We orient new nurses to our unit by providing a personalized approach with a range of 6-8 weeks for unit specific orientation with dedicated preceptors.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES: LACTATION KNOWLEDGE (INTERMEDIATE): Demonstrates mastery of lactation knowledge in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering results without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job. NURSING PATIENT EDUCATION (INTERMEDIATE): Demonstrates mastery of patient education in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of providing patient health education services without requiring instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving technical instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job. OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (NOVICE): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate operations management in practical applications of moderate difficulty. MENTORING & COACHING - (INTERMEDIATE): Demonstrates good training and mentoring practices on a regular basis. Acts as a mentor to a person in need of support and direction. Makes a concerted effort to seek problem definition so it is clearly understood, clarifying and refining goals, as needed. Knows how to make personal gains apparent, supporting pride in accomplishment. Cites specific examples of conduct and responds to lack of progress in constructive ways. Encourages two-way dialogue, soliciting opinions of people being trained and mentored. Explores alternative solutions and approaches which make a person or team more likely to accomplish their goals.
