Job Summary:
The V-Sitter provides technological support keeping patients safe for a specified population that meets detailed criteria. Observe patients and communicate with unit staff to ensure our patients are safe. The V-Sitter uses video monitors, computer and phone and provides education on the V-Sitter process to the patient, family/friends, and unit staff.
Department Summary:
Vanderbilt University Hospital cares for adult and geriatric patients during the entire care contiuum. The Float Pool assists with staffing many areas including over 35 different areas within VUH. Float Pool supplemental staffing provides a crucial service for our customers, not only to ensure safe quality patient care, but provides support for our unit colleagues as well. You will be offered opportunities to expand your knowledge and maintain an expansive skill set which will enable to you to become a resource to others
Position Shift:
- Part Time, 24 hours a week (2x12 hour shifts).
- Day Shift and Night Shift available
- 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am

Additional Key Elements/ Responsibilities:
- Provides continuous monitoring and observation of numerous patients through AvaSys software system, coordinating with the Clinical Staff Leader/Assigned nurse on relief efforts when leaving the station to maintain constant patient observation
- Always maintains visual observation of patients
- Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio camera device that is in the patient room; immediately contacts clinical staff leader or nursing staff if the patient requires assistance
- Provides patient with explanations as necessary through the monitoring system voice output, but does not counsel or provide opinions
- Serves as a resource to unit staff for camera placement, equipment management and troubleshooting of V-sitter monitoring system
- Maintains knowledge and is supportive of patient institutional confidentiality as related to Vanderbilt hospital policies
- Demonstrates the process of pulling the alarm immediately if a patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others by utilizing skills as well as clinical knowledge
- Operates AvaSys software/Red-Cap system/The VUIT Box by accurately navigating the system and understanding the functions as well as use of the monitoring device
- Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues, and ensures safe patient environment
- Considers the diverse needs of each patient, providing and ensuring highest level of service
- Performs other duties assigned within scope of responsibility and clinic competency
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency.
- Supports department-base goals which contribute to the success of the organization
- Serves as a knowledgeable mentor and resource to less experienced staff
- Serve as a runner (rounder)/1:1 sitter when needed on the unit
- Additional duties may be assigned at manager's discretion
