The Stroke Program at the University of Minnesota seeks 1 board-eligible / board-certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join a dynamic group of six specialist stroke APPs. This is a 1.0 FTE position.

 

Our stroke team provides longitudinal stroke care at two comprehensive stroke centers, the University of Minnesota Medical Center and Fairview Southdale Hospital, from the Emergency Department stroke code activation through discharge.  Additionally, the team utilizes telemedicine to provide expert stroke care throughout the state. Our mission also includes leading stroke education efforts and advancing stroke treatment through innovative quality improvement and clinical research.  APPs are integrated members of the academic stroke team, attending and participating in educational conferences. 

 

• Practice in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting.  APPs have the opportunity for independent practice in conjunction with 24-7 fellowship-trained physician specialist collaborators.
• Evaluate and treat stroke patients with a focus on emergent stroke interventions, diagnostic stroke evaluation, and secondary stroke prevention.
• Utilize telestroke to perform clinical care at remote partnering hospitals.  
• 10 hour day shifts with rotating weekends.

 

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and formal Nurse Practitioner training program or a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• NP candidates must have a current MN RN license and be approved or eligible by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges. PA candidates must have a current PA license with prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice.
• NP candidates must be certified through ANCC or eligible for ANCC national exam, PA candidates must be certified through the NCCPA and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges.
• Ability to work both independently and in teams, including those located at remote hospitals.
• Proficiency with using electronic medical records and chart documentation.

 

• Previous stroke care experience or neurology training is preferred, however, otherwise excellent candidates who are enthusiastic about neurology and stroke are encouraged to apply. Please consider including a cover letter to further define your interest in stroke care.

• An interest in local research including the opportunity to present one's findings at local and national conferences.
• A desire to participate in and enroll patients in important clinical trials testing new stroke treatment
